‘I’m Not Racist’: Chevy Chase Addresses His Controversial Community Exit

Chevy Chase has addressed his controversial exit from the NBC series Community. This comes after a new CNN documentary, I’m Chevy Chase, and You’re Not, reignited the conversation about the actor using the N-word on set. Chase called the ordeal “too great a misunderstanding.”

Chevy Chase, a veteran of SNL and a pivotal figure in Community, had a huge controversy on the sets of the latter. It has been confirmed by Community director Jay Chandrasekhar. Chase allegedly used the N-word on the sets of the show and went into a “full meltdown” (via EW).

Now, the veteran comedian has presented his side of the story. “It wasn’t a bad experience. I just didn’t think it was that good, the show,” Chase told The New York Times about Community. Interviewer Nicole Sperling pushed back on the comment, telling Chase that he had said otherwise before. “Oh, shut up,” Chase said in response, dismissing her claims.

After probing for a few more times, Chase finally shed light on his side of the story, after claiming that he thought his stint on Community ended well.

“It was too great a misunderstanding of what I was saying and not saying,” he said, “I thought that there was at least one person — and another who, for some ungodly reason, didn’t get me, didn’t know who I was, or didn’t realize for one second I’m not racist. They were too young to be aware of my work. Instead, there was some sort of visceral reaction from them.”

Chandrashekhar explained about the incident and revealed that Chase said “something” to Brown, whom he already had a “history” with regarding race. This ended with Brown storming off and asking for Chase’s apology.

According to Chandrasekhar, Chevy Chase claimed he did not say anything to Brown. The director also revealed that Chase returned to the sets of the show after the incident, claiming, “My career is ruined! I’m ruined!”
