Kim Kardashian had a set of unique Christmas gifts for all of her four children, North, 12, Saint, 10, Chicago, 7, and Psalm, 6, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Kanye West. The 45-year-old media personality gifted each kid their own puppy. But this did not sit well with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), who called out Kardashian.
PETA calls out Kim Kardashian’s gifts
Kim Kardashian gifted four small Pomeranian puppies, two with dark fur, one with a cream coat, and one with sable fur, to her four children, North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm. She posted a story of this with the caption, “Each kid got a puppy.”
While many may find this adorable, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) founder Ingrid Newkirk called out Kim Kardashian for her Christmas gifts, saying that she could have taken this opportunity to advocate for shelter animals, who struggle to find homes.
“Puppies are not plushies, and it’s a damn shame that Kim missed the chance to be a spokesperson for shelter pups and instead is being rightly slammed on social media for that,” Newkirk said in a statement to PEOPLE. “[They can] try to make some amends now by sending their kids to volunteer at a local shelter or paying for a local shelter adopt-a-thon or at least one spay day to help stop the growing homeless puppy crisis,” Newkirk added.
Kim’s sister, Khloé, also recently got a dog, revealing that her family got it as a Christmas present.
The Kardashian-Jenner family has had a big bunch of animals over the years, including dogs, cats, reptiles, and even horses.
PETA has been a strong advocate of not buying dogs from breeders or pet shops. They have emphasized how this causes the homeless pet crisis. They have also emphasized that every pet bought robs a shelter animal of a home, further leading to overpopulation and mismanagement.
