Paul Rudd Shares His Cringe-Worthy Audition Fail: ‘Never Did That Again’

Paul Rudd has opened up about one of the most awkward moments from his early Hollywood days, and it’s a story fans likely haven’t heard before. In a recent episode of the New Heights podcast, the beloved actor reflected on a failed audition that went so poorly it left a lasting impression on him.

Paul Rudd talks about his failed audition

Rudd recounted one of his earliest and most embarrassing audition experiences, which he vowed never to repeat. The conversation began with Jason Kelce inquiring if Rudd had experienced a “Welcome to Hollywood” moment, to which the actor responded by saying he’s had “a few.” He recalled a particular casting call where he was instructed to portray a “tough” character.

Rudd then shared the anecdote of Danny DeVito auditioning for the role of Louie De Palma in Taxi alongside the Kelce brothers. He described how DeVito entered the audition room, surrounded by others, and boldly criticized the script as “garbage” before dramatically leaping onto the table. This audacious act was surprisingly well received by the directors, leading to his selection for the role. Rudd noted that he had learned from this experience that such boldness can lead to landing a job.

Following this, Rudd recounted his own audition, where he attempted to emulate DeVito’s approach. He entered the casting director’s office, where a woman was seated behind her desk. In an effort to appear tough, Rudd chose to hold a cigarette as a prop, although he did not light it. In a moment of acting frustrated and being in character, he dropped it, damaging the carpet. The woman simply dismissed him with a polite “Thank you,” and he soon exited the room.

As Rudd drove home, he reflected inwardly, convinced that he had not secured the job. Shortly thereafter, he received a call from his agent, who immediately inquired, “What happened?” Paul explained everything to her, stating that he needed to prepare and enhance his skills. Nevertheless, Rudd is mindful not to let this become one of his unforgettable “Welcome to Hollywood” moments.
