James Cameron recently addressed a joke made by Amy Poehler at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards that alluded to his marriage and to his former wife, Kathryn Bigelow. He described the roast as an “ignorant” dig at a platform meant to celebrate filmmakers and cinema, rather than for roasting people’s personal lives. While he took it sportingly, Cameron also felt the joke ultimately went too far.
James Cameron comments on Amy Poehler’s 2013 joke
In a conversation with The New York Times, Cameron slammed Poehler for making a joke about his former marriage to Bigelow at the 2013 Golden Globes. He said, “Amy Poehler’s remark was an ignorant dig, at an event which is supposed to be a celebration of cinema and filmmakers, not a roast. I’m pretty thick-skinned, and happy to be the butt of a good-natured joke, but that went too far.”
Sharing his thoughts on the people who laughed at the joke made by Poehler, he further added, “The fact that people found it funny shows exactly what they think of me, even though they have no idea who I am or how I work.”
In 2013, Poehler, along with Tina Fey, co-hosted the Golden Globes, where they also took the opportunity to roast Hollywood. Among their many jokes, one included that of Bigelow, ex-wife of Cameron, who was nominated for the best director category for Zero Dark Thirty. This political thriller movie is centered around the mission to track down Osama bin Laden. While talking about the torture scenes present in the movie, Poehler roasted Cameron and Bigelow’s marriage. She said, “When it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.”
Cameron and Bigelow split in 1991. Now, he has been married to Suzy Amis since 2000. They originally met on the set of Cameron’s Titanic. However, they weren’t in a relationship back then, given that Cameron was already linked to Linda Hamilton. They share three daughters: Claire, Quinn, and Elizabeth Rose.
