Mamma Mia! 3 Gets Exciting Update From Lead: ‘About F—ing Time’

Mamma Mia! 3 seems to be finally moving forward. Amanda Seyfried has shared a new update that hints at renewed momentum for the long-anticipated sequel.

Amanda Seyfried answers Mamma Mia! 3 question

Seyfried, who played Sophie Sheridan in the original Mamma Mia!, told MovieWeb that returning to the franchise feels natural after so many years. “I grew up in that world and people really love it,” she said. “The set is joyous itself … Having that joy, you know, reverberate again through the world is just all positive … We always need to go back to what brings us joy,” the actress added.

She described the Mamma Mia! films as a “cozy home” and said the sense of reunion is a major reason she wants to return. Seyfried pointed to the ensemble cast — Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Pierce Brosnan, Christine Baranski, and Julie Walters — as a major draw, adding that she hopes Meryl Streep will also return, despite Donna’s death before Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, which came out in 2018. “It’s almost been 10 years, and we said we wouldn’t wait 10 years to do it. And it’s just, it’s about f—ing time,” Seyfried said.

She also shared an interest in revisiting Sophie’s story from a new stage of life in Mamma Mia 3. “I love the idea of picking up where I left off and/or seeing where my character is as a mother,” she added. Seyfried is herself a parent, and that makes the prospect even more meaningful for her. “I love being a mother, so I love portraying a mother.”

Earlier this year, Amanda Seyfried confirmed to ET that Mamma Mia! 3 is officially “happening,” adding that, ideally, production would begin in summer 2026. “It’s going to have to take a lot of people’s schedules aligning and the story being right,” Seyfried had said. She also noted that ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus would need to decide which songs would be featured in the next film.
