Underrated Jason Statham Action Movie With Sharks Gets Prime Video Release Date

Jason Statham’s shark sequel Meg 2: The Trench is set to find a new audience on streaming, with Prime Video adding the movie to its catalog. Directed by Ben Wheatley, the 2023 follow-up expands the scope of The Meg with deeper waters, bigger threats, and larger-scale action.

Meg 2: The Trench to stream on Prime Video in January 2026

Prime Video has confirmed that Meg 2: The Trench will join its streaming lineup at the start of next year. The Jason Statham–led sequel is scheduled to begin streaming on January 1, 2026 (via ComicBook.com).

Released in 2023, the film was directed by Ben Wheatley and serves as the follow-up to 2018’s The Meg. The film once again centers on Jonas Taylor, an experienced deep-sea diver who becomes entangled in a dangerous mission far below the ocean’s surface. A routine research expedition spirals into crisis after an illegal mining operation disrupts the seabed, unleashing massive prehistoric sharks.

As chaos spreads underwater, Jonas and his team must navigate a series of escalating threats. They face a dual danger from both human interference and ancient predators. Statham leads the cast as Jonas Taylor. He is joined by Wu Jing as Jiuming Zhang, Sophia Cai as Meiying, Cliff Curtis as Mac, Page Kennedy as DJ, Sergio Peris Mencheta as Montes, and more.

Critical reception for Meg 2: The Trench was mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes, Meg 2: The Trench holds a 27 percent critics’ score based on more than 184 reviews. Meanwhile, the audience reception proved far more favorable, with a 72 percent rating.

Commercially, the film performed strongly. According to Box Office Mojo, it grossed approximately $398 million worldwide, including $82 million domestically and around $315 million from international markets.
