Daredevil: Born Again’s Charlie Cox on Which Rom-Com Is a ‘Core Memory’

Charlie Cox and Zooey Deschanel are spreading some rom-com cheer just in time for the holidays. The duo, starring in Prime Video’s new movie Merv, chatted about the romantic comedies that stuck with them over the years, from classic screwball comedies and memorable modern hits.

Zooey Deschanel, 45, shared her love for the rom-com classics that shaped her taste. She called the 1989 favorite When Harry Met Sally, “obviously a classic,” and gushed over early screwball hits that set the stage for the genre. “I’m really a big fan of screwball comedies that are the original rom-com: It Happened One Night, Bringing Up Baby, The Awful Truth, Philadelphia Story,” she told People.

Charlie Cox, 43, also talked about his early love for rom-coms, singling out America’s Sweethearts (2001) as a personal favorite. He shared that his very first trip to the U.S. at 17 included a visit to an American movie theater to watch the film. “My very first trip to America, when I was 17, I went to an American movie theater and saw that film, and it’s kind of a core memory for me,” Cox said.

Both Charlie Cox and Zooey Deschanel shared what drew them to Merv. Deschanel pointed out that rom-coms have been pretty rare lately, so the chance to star in a “great rom-com with these complex characters” was too good to pass up. The story follows a recently separated couple who take their dog on a holiday trip to cheer him up, and it packs both romance and playful humor.

Cox revealed that working with Deschanel was a huge draw for him. He admitted he’s been a fan of hers for his whole career and hadn’t tried a rom-com before. Getting the chance to learn from her made the project even more exciting. “I’ve been a huge fan of her for my whole career, and I haven’t worked in this genre at all, so if I’m going to get that opportunity, being able to learn from the best, that’s the way to do it,” Cox said.
