Macaulay Culkin on how his own upbringing has impacted his parenting
During his latest appearance on Mythical Kitchen, Macaulay Culkin shared details on how he treats his children. “There’s, there’s a word that I use in my household ’cause it’s something that I didn’t really hear enough of when I was a kid,” the Home Alone star said. “And that’s ‘proud’. Man, I’m proud of my kids. You know, I go out there, I’d be like ‘the number one movie in America,’ and stuff like that. But I never got the ‘p’ word,” he explained.
Culkin then shared an anecdote from one of his kids’ recitals. “My kid, he does his recital and the curtain opens, and he’s really excited about it,” the Richie Rich actor recalled. “He’s gonna play a bug, and he’s like, ‘I’m the bug who gets the egg.’ And as soon as that curtain opens, he freezes, and he cries, and he runs off stage,” he said.
The 45-year-old continued, “And so I go scoop him up. The first thing out of my mouth is, ‘Man, I’m so proud of you. You were so brave to go out there like that. Like you did that. There are so many people, and I love your costume. I’m proud of you, proud of you, proud of you.’”
The actor-musician shares two sons, Dakota, 4, and Carson, 3, with actress Brenda Song. Macaulay Culkin admitted that he feels “proud” of himself that he’s able to provide for his family in the “right kind of way.”
He acknowledged that a generational trauma like his own experience with his father can “haunt” a person. However, he credited his wife for teaching him about how to be a “better father” and a “better person.” The My Girl actor said, “Brenda’s such a good mother. She makes me want to be a better father, a better person, but a better father because I see how good she is, and I see how happy our kids are.”
