Sydney Sweeney Breaks Flop Curse With The Housemaid

It seems like Sydney Sweeney has finally broken the flop curse with The Housemaid. Sweeney‘s latest project, which is two days away from release, has opened to promising reviews on the Tomatometer. The actress has had four releases in 2025 so far – Eden, Echo Valley, Americana, and Christy, and the fifth and final release for the year is The Housemaid.

Sydney Sweeney’s The Housemaid receives good reviews

Sydney Sweeney’s The Housemaid currently stands at a solid 78% on the Tomatometer, based on 41 reviews. The psychological thriller has so far generated a positive response from the audience, making it Sweeney’s best-reviewed film this year. Interestingly, The Housemaid boasts a solid cast, which includes Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, and Michele Morrone.

Book fans are familiar with the hugely popular eponymous novel by Freida McFadden, released in 2022. This has built viewers’ anticipation for the edgy thriller to translate onto the screen. The Housemaid is made on a reported budget of $35 million. Fans and critics expect it to open to $30 million-plus domestically (via World of Reel). Fans have shared their reviews on the Tomatometer.

A user by the name of Sean P. Means wrote, “Sweeney and Seyfried have the most fun, as their roles and perspectives shift through the narrative. Sklenar puts his smoking-hot good guy persona … through the ringer in some entertaining ways.”

Meagan Navarro penned, “The salacious twists of McFadden’s massive hit novel get dialed up to a delightfully deranged degree, making for a wildly entertaining psychological thriller that lets Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney cut loose in the most comedic and violent ways.”

Previously, Sydney Sweeney lavished praise on the book and revealed her character would stay true to the original source material. She told the YouTube channel Mauxa, “I think that it’s going to be really exciting to see the movie come to life. I mean, I’m a huge fan of the book. So, being able to see all of these twisted elements and the secret smiles and how just dysfunctional this family has come to life is going to be really exciting.”

The Euphoria alum assured fans that her character, Millie, would remain true to the book version. She said, “Millie is really true to the book, which I was really happy about. She is just trying to figure out how to navigate a very, very complicated situation. And she finds herself in something way bigger than she thought she was prepared for.”
