Crystal, Albert Brooks, Martin Short, Larry David, and others who knew the Reiners well signed the statement, which they first released to The Associated Press. It described Rob Reiner as “a great comic actor” who became “a master storyteller.”

The signers noted his wide range as a director, saying, “There is no other director who has his range. From comedy to drama to ‘mockumentary’ to documentary, he was always at the top of his game.”

The tribute goes on to single out Reiner’s sensitivity to dialogue and tone. “His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant,” the statement read.

The group also praised his approach to collaboration. They expressed, “For the actors, he loved them. For the writers, he made them better. His greatest gift was freedom. If you had an idea, he listened, he brought you into the process.”

The friends emphasized that Rob and Michele were also active civic figures. “Rob was also a passionate, brave citizen, who not only cared for this country he loved, he did everything he could to make it better, and with his loving wife Michele, he had the perfect partner,” the statement said.

It added that the couple “devoted a great deal of their lives for the betterment of our fellow citizens” and called them “a special force together — dynamic, unselfish and inspiring.”

The remarks arrived amid ongoing legal developments. Authorities found Rob and Michele Reiner dead in their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025. According to public reports, prosecutors have charged their son, Nick Reiner, with two counts of first-degree murder. Authorities have not released a full account of events. The family has asked for privacy as investigators continue their work.
