Fans react to Macaulay Culkin saying Die Hard isn’t a Christmas movie

The Home Alone star sparked a fan debate with his take on what counts as a “Christmas movie.” In a viral TikTok video, he argued that while Die Hard is set during Christmas, it could technically work on any other holiday, too. He jokingly added that he’s a sort of the “Godfather of Christmas,” hinting that his opinion carries some weight.

“No, it’s not. It’s based around Christmas… if it was also St. Patrick’s Day, it would still be—it would work,” the actor shared. “But you couldn’t do, like, Memorial Day Home Alone, no. It doesn’t work that way. I’m just sayin’. Look, I’m kind of the Godfather of Christmas nowadays, so yes, my opinion has some sway.”

Fans didn’t hold back, firing off hilarious takes. One joked, saying Die Hard is just Home Alone “with firearms.” Another pointed out that the whole plot only works because McClane’s trying to be with his family for Christmas. Others ran with the idea that “Home Alone is a Die Hard movie,” and “Isn’t Die Hard basically a rated R version of Home Alone?”

Fans also argued that Home Alone could easily work outside of Christmas. One pointed out that Kevin’s family could just as easily leave him behind for a Memorial Day weekend at a lake house, and the house could still get robbed. Another fan wrote that the movie’s main events don’t rely on the holiday at all.

One comment summed it up perfectly, noting that while people can debate whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie (even if they’re wrong), Culkin’s logic falls flat. Home Alone could work during any holiday, and Christmas is just as central to Die Hard as it is to Home Alone.
