Leonardo DiCaprio Has No Plans of Directing For a Reason

There are many actors who move from acting to directing, almost like it is the natural order of things, but this is not true for Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio. The One Battle After Another Star is one of the rare actors who does not plan to try his hand at directing. The reason for this is rather specific.

Leonardo DiCaprio will not direct movies

Many great actors, including George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, and Clint Eastwood, have transitioned from acting to directing. There are almost endless examples of such actors. But Leonardo DiCaprio is not one who is eager to try this out anytime soon.

The reason for this is quite simple. He has worked in too many Martin Scorsese films. In a discussion with the legendary Martin Scorsese during TIME magazine’s A Year in TIME event in New York City on December 10, 2025, DiCaprio said, “Some people have asked me if I wanted to direct. I’m like, ‘I would never want to direct. I could never do anything close to what Martin Scorsese does. Why would I do that? (via PEOPLE)”

Observing the filmmaking process, especially as it is unfolding in the hands of director Martin Scorsese, widely considered one of the greatest directors of all time, the 51-year-old actor continued, “You play these characters, you try to get into the depth of their soul as much as you possibly can. And I would’ve loved to be much more of a voyeur … to watch what you (Scorsese) do behind the camera.” He added, “If I look back on anything, I would’ve loved to have observed that process behind the camera a lot more.”

DiCaprio collaborated with Scorsese in as many as six films so far, all of them to great success. His last performance in The Killers of the Flower Moon was also widely acclaimed.

While he may not sit in the director’s chair soon, DiCaprio remains a favorite of filmmakers around the world for his versatility and range.
