Why 1 Home Alone Star Won’t Attend Movie’s 35th Anniversary Celebrations

A Home Alone star recently revealed that he won’t be attending the movie’s 35th-anniversary events. Daniel Stern shared that he doesn’t like leaving his farm these days, though he’s open to joining via phone or Zoom if needed. Stern played Marv Murchins, a crook who often teamed up with Joe Pesci’s Harry to pull off robberies in the franchise, which kicked off in 1990 with the release of the first film in the U.S.

In conversation with PEOPLE, Stern shared his reason for not attending Home Alone’s 35th anniversary events. He said, “I don’t leave my farm. It’s no offense to the movie. I’m just … a phone call, Zoom call, I’m in, but… I’m a bit of a homebody.” Sharing how he feels overwhelmed whenever people show their appreciation for the movie, Stern added, “I love knowing that everybody loves it, but like, actual people come at me and say, ‘We love it.’ It’s a little overwhelming sometimes.”

The Manhattan star added that while he didn’t expect the film to become a massive hit, he always believed that it was a standout project. He said, “I did know that it was a gem of a movie.”

Furthermore, he appreciated John Hughes for writing a script that was not only incredibly funny but also emotionally charged. “Hughes wrote the funniest script I’ve ever read. I mean, I was rolling on the floor, laughing reading it. It was so funny, but it was also full of heart, and you know — the kid and the neighbor saves him, and he and the mother reunite … I mean, it was so emotional,” he noted.

Reflecting on the beloved holiday movie’s success, Stern stated, “It was so funny, it was so true, and so I did know that. I was hopeful that we were making a great movie. I had no idea, obviously — no one could — of the longevity of its life.”

In 2024, Stern decided to step away from his Hollywood career to focus on farming.
