Fans of Doc were swooning after Jake and Amy’s emotional reunion in the Season 2 fall finale. After a tense patient case set at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, they finally faced their feelings, sealing it with a heartfelt kiss. Now, everyone’s buzzing about how their romance will play out with workplace rules, past relationships, and personal struggles.
Jon Ecker says Jake and Amy will have to deal with the HR component in Doc Season 2
Jon Ecker, who plays Jake, opened up about where things are headed for him and Amy, saying their romance is now moving to a more serious and equal level.
“This time will be different because they’re on much more equal footing. They know each other way better now. It’s gone from a fun fling to something deeper,” co-showrunner Hank Steinberg explained (via Soaps.com).
But getting closer comes with its own headaches. Jake and Amy now have to steer through hospital rules, since bosses like Joan are keeping an eye on workplace romances. Ecker teased that now that they’re back together, the next hurdle is dealing with HR. Joan doesn’t exactly want them to be dating, and technically as it is against hospital protocol.
Adding extra drama to Jake and Amy’s romance is Jake’s past, especially his ex-wife, who still casts a shadow over his life. Even though he left her for betrayal, Steinberg said that she is a powerful force in his life and is always going to create problems.
On a personal level, Jake usually keeps his emotions locked up around family and coworkers. But for Amy, he is fiercely protective. Ecker explained that he cares about Amy and doesn’t want anyone creating problems for her life or career.
“Obviously, he cares about Amy. He doesn’t want somebody doing something to sabotage her life or her career,” Ecker shared. “So Jake, to whatever extent he can, will get involved, even if it’s just for emotional support…. He’s definitely going to take an interest in what’s going on and who’s doing this and why.”
