Meghan Markle Called by Sussex Title ‘Not Unusual’ — Expert

A recent Harper’s Bazaar interview noted how Meghan Markle is famous around the world as the Duchess of Sussex—and it turns out being introduced by that title is not as controversial as some might think. Journalist Kaitlyn Greenidge noted that Markle was formally announced as “The Duchess of Sussex” upon arrival at two separate locations, and now etiquette experts are weighing in on whether that is acceptable. The verdict: despite differing opinions, experts emphasize that there is nothing improper about her choice.

Meghan Markle’s Sussex introduction is her ‘individual’ choice, per etiquette expert

The “Duchess of Sussex” introduction in the Harper’s Bazaar interview sparked debate online, with some claiming Meghan Markle’s use of the title violates royal protocol. Still, multiple etiquette professionals insist it is perfectly appropriate. Besides, it is entirely up to Markle herself.

Etiquette expert Myka Meier told Us Weekly exclusively, “From an etiquette standpoint, using a British title either socially or professionally globally — including the U.S. — is not unusual or improper.” She explained, “The choice of how each member of the royal family wishes to be addressed is ultimately up to that individual.”

Meier also noted that the 44-year-old’s “title would be the formal way of address, which is likely how her team was trained to introduce her,” adding, “It is more a matter of personal style or preference of each titled person.”

The debate over Markle‘s name is not new. Earlier this year, during her Netflix show, “With Love, Meghan,” she joked with guest Mindy Kaling about her title, saying, “You keep saying, ‘Meghan Markle.’ You know I’m ‘Sussex’ now?” She later explained that she and Prince Harry share the name with their children. As such, she admitted, “I didn’t know how meaningful it would be to me, but it just means so much to say, ‘This is our family name!'”

In the end, as Myka Meier clarified, how Meghan Markle chooses to be addressed is entirely up to her, and “The Duchess of Sussex” remains a name the world knows well.
