Ethan Hawke recently revealed the vow he made to his children, Maya Hawke (27) and Levon Hawke (23), following his split from Uma Thurman in the early 2000s. In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, the Before Sunrise actor shared that handling a public separation becomes all the more difficult with children involved.

“The public eye is like gasoline, but what makes divorce hard is the stuff that makes it hard for everyone—the family elements, how to help the kids through it,” Hawke said in the interview published on November 20. “I’m so envious of people who have amicable splits,” he added.

Explaining how his children’s mental well-being was his top priority during the difficult time, Hawke shared the promise he made to his children after his separation from his wife and their mother. “I vowed to my kids so many times not to talk about the divorce in public”, the Black Phone actor stated, explaining that he’s aware of the weight of each word that comes out of his mouth.

Thurman made a similar statement in 2006 during an interview with Parade, saying, “I cannot participate in anything critical about my children’s father.” “I just need to keep peace. I think it’s fair to say that I haven’t said one mean thing, and I’m not going to start now. It’s terrible for my family”, the Kill Bill actress added.

Post their divorce, the former couple has seemingly maintained a cordial relationship and refrained from speaking negatively about each other in public.
