The English actor joked at the Wicked: For Good premiere that his high school bullies are likely bragging about having gone to school with him. Bailey stated, “They’ve got their tickets for the first night of Wicked. When ‘For Good’ is playing, they’ll be like, ‘Yeah, it’s so amazing because I knew him.’”
Bailey also revealed that his life experiences shaped his perception of his role in Wicked and helped him prepare. He reminisced, “It’s that extraordinary thing. It’s a very real and true story for everyone who is deemed other or doesn’t fall into a typical understanding. And that is what Wicked is about. It’s about otherness and it’s about identity and the power of that.”
On a parting note, the Wicked star had kind words for his and host Justin Sylvester’s younger selves. Bailey mused, “I just know that little us would have loved seeing us now doing this.” (via E News)
A couple of days ago, in an interview with Sky News, Bailey confessed that he was bullied in high school for his sexuality. The 37-year-old actor revealed that he suffered from anxiety and depression while being bullied at school. Bailey shared, “I experienced all of that. It became clear quite early on that something that was very specific and clear to me about who I was, it wasn’t safe and it wasn’t celebrated.”
Moreover, Bailey talked about being the first openly gay actor to be named PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive. He said, “There’s nothing sexier than progress. Of course, there was no way I wasn’t going to step into that corner this year, when the opportunity arose.” (via Forbes)
