Glen Powell appeared on SNL this week and turned the hosting gig into both a heartwarming and hilarious time. This also marked a full-circle moment for a local UPS driver who had once met Powell at his family’s home four years ago. The actor was gearing up to host SNL, but it got cancelled. For his belated hosting debut, Powell decided to include the UPS driver as well.
Glen Powell reunites with a UPS delivery guy on his SNL debut
Glen Powell reminisced about the time when he was set to make his SNL hosting debut about four years ago. At the time, Top Gun: Maverick was about to be released. He got the news while hanging out with his family at their home. As they were celebrating, a UPS driver named Mitch happened to be delivering a package to them. Powell told Mitch that he was going to host SNL during Christmas and thus, he should mark the date. They then all clicked a selfie together.
However, when COVID hit, Top Gun: Maverick was shifted to a later release date. Accordingly, Lorne Michaels did not think it would be appropriate to have Powell host at that time and canceled Powell’s appearance.
When Powell returned, he decided to bring Mitch with him. His sisters were able to track the UPS driver down and get his phone number. During his monologue, Powell explained, “So to prove to Mitch that I am not a liar, I flew him all the way to New York…He thought it was a scam, but he still came, and he’s sitting in the audience tonight.” The actor then invited him to be on stage with him and recreate the selfie that they had taken four years ago.
Ending his SNL monologue on yet another joke, Powell continued, “I had to wait my entire life, plus four years, to be here. The best things in life don’t happen overnight, and no one knows that better than UPS.”
