A new claim from royal biographer Tom Bower suggests that the relationship between King Charles and Meghan Markle was more complicated than many believed. In his book “Revenge,” Bower writes that Charles once appeared close to his daughter-in-law. However, according to the author, the monarch “never really understood her or what she wanted.”
King Charles never understood Meghan Markle’s wants, claims royal author
The Daily Mail reported excerpts from Tom Bower’s “Revenge,” highlighting the relationship between King Charles and Meghan Markle. According to Bower, tension began to show during a family visit to the Castle of Mey in 2018, where Charles and Camilla hosted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shortly after their wedding.
Reports at the time painted a picture of cozy family walks and meals. However, the royal author claims that the reality was much more strained. Bower wrote that Charles grew frustrated over Markle’s refusal to speak with her father, Thomas Markle, whose public criticism of the royal family had become a source of embarrassment.
Moreover, Bower detailed that Charles confronted Harry. He reportedly asked his son, “Can’t she just go and see him and make this stop?” and the situation brought to light how differently each side viewed the growing fallout. Markle felt that her in-laws “fundamentally don’t understand” her situation. Meanwhile, Charles and the late Queen Elizabeth were reportedly perplexed by the duchess’ reluctance to reconcile.
The book also described how Queen Camilla had her own reservations about Markle. According to Bower, she found Markle’s charm a “performance” and sensed that the American actor would struggle with the expectations of royal life. Additionally, Camilla reportedly believed Markle was not the kind of person who would “sacrifice her independence to serve silently as a team-player.”
Less than two years after the trip, Harry and Markle stepped down as working royals and relocated to California. Bower’s account painted a picture of a family trying to connect across cultural and personal differences — and of Charles, who, despite good intentions, allegedly never truly understood his daughter-in-law, Markle.
