Reboot of Iconic TV Show Canceled at Paramount+, Season 5 Status Uncertain

Paramount+ has reportedly canceled the reboot of an immensely popular TV series, leaving the fate of the show’s Season 5, which the network has already produced, uncertain. The animated series Dora, which premiered in April 2024, serves as a reboot of the iconic show Dora the Explorer. At the time of this article’s composition, three seasons of the show have aired.

Paramount+ cancels Dora ahead of Season 4 premiere

Dora has been canceled at Paramount+ despite the show’s considerable popularity. According to Deadline, the network has produced two additional seasons of the show beyond the ones that have already come out. Paramount+ hasn’t revealed the release date of Season 4, though it will reportedly debut at some point in the future and will have a linear window on Nick Jr. However, the status of the fifth and final season remains unclear.

Despite this, Dora can still get more episodes, as Deadline also reports that Paramount is looking for third-party licensing opportunities for the show and Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, another scrapped TV project. Given that several Nickelodeon titles are now available on Netflix, Dora could potentially end up on the streaming giant.

Like the original series, Dora revolves around Dora Márquez, an eight-year-old girl, as she embarks on various adventures in a rainforest with her monkey friend Boots. Chris Gifford and Valerie Walsh Valdes created the show for Paramount. The voice cast includes Diana Zermeño as Dora, Asher Colton Spence as Boots, Anairis Quiñones as Map, Katarina Sky as Backpack, and Danny Burstein as Grumpy Old Troll.

The cancellations come following Paramount’s merger with Skydance and the resulting restructuring. Nickelodeon Animation Studios, which develops Nick’s animated shows such as Dora, subsequently became part of a TV media division overseen by Chair George Cheeks alongside Nickelodeon and other Paramount linear networks.

In a memo, Cheeks indicated last week that Paramount would thin down its cable show slate. He also stated they would focus on “franchises like SpongeBob, PAW Patrol, RuPaul’s Drag Race, South Park, Ms. Pat, and The Daily Show.”

While Dora seemingly didn’t make the list of priorities, given the franchise’s longevity, it might return in some form down the line.
