Shogun Creators Tease Major Plot Details for Season 2

With FX officially moving ahead with Season 2 of its hit series Shogun, program creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo have shed light on what fans can expect from the second season. In a recent interview, Marks and Kondo opened up about the success of the Hiroyuki Sanada-led historical drama while also hinting at what is to come in the Emmy-winning series.

Shogun Season 2 to have an ‘unexpected love story’ and grand-scale ‘battle sequences’

During a discussion at the recent Disney+ originals preview at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, Marks noted that the follow-up season of Shogun will not only deal with the aftermath of Season 1 but will also feature a love story, along with “battle sequences” of epic scale, as per Variety.

“Part 2 is, I would say, two things,” the Oscar-nominated screenwriter said before adding, “Like the first season, I think part two is a really sweeping, beautiful, and you’re never going to see it coming, entirely unexpected love story. It’s also a story of war and the cost of war. There are battle sequences that we’re putting together now in part two. I don’t think you’ve ever seen anything like this kind of scale, this kind of tragedy, and this kind of humanity.”

While Marks described the upcoming second season as “a saga first and foremost,” Shogun co-creator Rachel Kondo disclosed that Season 2 will venture into “deeper, more cavernous spaces.”

Despite the hype around the series, it will be some time before Shogun Season 2 is ready to premiere on the small screen. “This show is going to take us a little while to produce. It’s not coming out one year later,” Marks confirmed.

Notably, the second season of the series will take place 10 years after the events of the first season. Explaining the creative team’s thought process behind this time-jump, Marks stated, “We’re trying to use this jump as a way to come back to our characters again for the very first time, to see them, to see what’s changed in their lives over the course of the last 10 years, and to rediscover them.”
