Eddie Murphy is a true legend in his field. From his humble beginnings as a young standout in stand-up and on Saturday Night Live, Murphy went on to deliver multiple hit movies and almost never stopped doing what he did best. In the midst of that, he also kept building a family life that he was proud of.

Speaking to PEOPLE in this rare deep dive interview, the actor spoke about the self-esteem that held him together throughout. “My most important blessing is that I love myself,” he said, “I’ve always loved myself, always been my biggest fan. That’s at the core of all of the decisions that you make. Some people go through their whole lives and get to the end and say, ‘I finally love myself.’ I started out that way.”

This led to his magnanimous success in the industry, which saw him cement his legacy in Hollywood.

Apart from being the Hollywood icon that he is, Murphy is also a father of 10 children. In this interview, he also addressed that.

“It just happened,” he said about having 10 children, “I never knew I would have 10 kids, but now it’s the best thing ever. If you can afford that many kids, you should have as many kids as you can afford. That is fun.”

He also pointed out that his children “are all decent people. I don’t have one rotten one, and I would like to think that they got some of that from me.”
