Shōgun Season 2 Announces New Cast, Gets Release Date Update

The television landscape continues to shift as prestige dramas maintain strong global momentum. After a period of limited updates from major studios, Shōgun has re-emerged with significant new developments. The series’ next chapter has now reached a key milestone, bringing fresh details about its production timeline, expanding cast, and an early indication of its release date.

Shōgun Season 2 gets filming window and new cast update

FX announced that Shōgun Season 2 will begin production in Vancouver in January 2026. The season adds new and returning cast members to the ensemble, led by Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis. New additions include Masataka Kubota as Hyūga, Jun Kunimura as Gōda, Sho Kaneta in the role of Hidenobu, Asami Kizukawa as Aya, and Takaaki Enoki in the role of Lord Ito. Returning actors include Shinnosuke Abe, Yuko Miyamoto, Fumi Nikaidô, Eita Okuno, Yuka Kouri, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, and Hiroto Kanai. (via Deadline)

For U.S. viewers, Season 2 will be available on FX and Hulu. Meanwhile, international audiences will be able to stream the show on Disney+. Season 1 remains available on Hulu. The sophomore season is set 10 years after the first season. It continues the historical storyline based on James Clavell’s novel. Season 1 followed Lord Yoshii Toranaga as he faced political threats from the Council of Regents. The plot shifted when English pilot John Blackthorne provided strategic information that altered Toranaga’s position in the conflict.

At the Walt Disney Company Asia Pacific Disney+ Originals Preview in Hong Kong, the studio reportedly revealed the Season 2 writing and directing teams. Writers include Justin Marks, Shannon Goss, Maegan Houang, Matt Lambert, Rachel Kondo, Sofie Somoroff, Caillin Puente, and Emily Yoshida. Takeshi Fukunaga and Hiromi Kamata will be returning to direct, along with new joinees Justin Marks, Anthony Byrne, and Kate Herron.

With production beginning in January, the release window could fall in late 2026 if post-production progresses quickly, or in 2027.
