Kayla Nicole‘s Halloween costume stirred controversy, with fans saying that her costume, inspired by the song “He Wasn’t Man Enough” by Toni Braxton, was a dig at Taylor Swift. The sports journalist, who is also ex-partner of Travis Kelce, clapped back at the rumors. She expressed during Saturday’s “Pre-Game” podcast episode that her costume was just a tribute to Braxton. She further mentioned that she is “not in the business of tearing other women down.”
Kayla Nicole says she’s ‘not in the business of tearing other women down’
Kayla Nicole’s latest Halloween costume drew a lot of backlash. People thought it was a subtle jab at Taylor Swift. Kayla dressed as Toni Braxton from the 2000 song “He Wasn’t Man Enough.” She shared an Instagram post, wearing a see-through mini dress, grooving to the song and the lyrics, “Do you know I made him leave/Do you know he begged to stay with me, he wasn’t man enough for me.” She posted this with the caption, “She’s an icon. She’s a legend,” mentioning the singer Braxton.
However, since Travis and Kayla have a dating history, fans were quick to believe that it was a jibe at Swift. During a recent Saturday’s “Pre-Game” podcast episode, Nicole cleared the air and said that the reason why she wore the costume was that she wanted to “celebrate” Braxton and her phenomenal music.
She further expressed that Halloween is the perfect “opportunity” for her to “dress up as someone” she admires.
“Halloween is an opportunity for me not to be myself and to dress up as someone that I admire, someone that I’ve been a fan of, someone that I think is chef’s kiss,” the Tribe Therepē founder said.
She added, “You guys don’t want celebrities … to dress up as celebrities, but I’m confused because what am I supposed to do? A doctor? Superwoman?”
“I’m not in the business of tearing other women down. I am in the business of celebrating them,” Nicole told listeners, giving a befitting reply to those she said were trying “to project their own narratives” about the song choice and the outfit.
