The biographical sports drama feature Christy, which stars Sydney Sweeney as the former professional boxer Christy Martin, has performed poorly in its opening weekend at the domestic box office. It can now potentially become another 2025 box office disappointment for the Anyone but You actress. Notably, Christy received mixed to positive responses from critics and currently holds a 67% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes after 138 reviews.
Christy movie gets a disappointing box office opening weekend
Christy has taken $1.3 million at the domestic box office after releasing in over 2,000 theaters, per Box Office Mojo. This means that the movie had one of the worst wide box office openings for a new release in history.
This also means Christy is likely to continue Sweeney’s disappointing theatrical streak in 2025. It is her third 2025 movie to score below $2 million at the US box office after Americana and Eden. Americana originally had its world premiere at South by Southwest in 2023 before releasing in US theaters on August 15, 2025. It made around $500,000 in its opening weekend. (via Deadline)
Eden premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival before being released theatrically in the US on August 22, 2025. It grossed around $1 million in the first weekend. (via ScreenRant)
Sweeney was also part of the cast of 2025’s Echo Valley. It came out in select US theaters on June 6, 2025, before debuting on Apple TV on June 13.
Christy had its world premiere in the Special Presentations section at this year’s TIFF. David Michôd, the filmmaker behind 2019’s The King, directed Christy and developed its screenplay with Mirrah Foulkes from a story by Katherine Fugate. The film’s cast includes Ben Foster as James V. Martin, Merritt Wever as Joyce Salters, Katy O’Brian as Lisa Holewyne, Ethan Embry as John Salters, Coleman Pedigo as Randy Salters, and Chad L. Coleman as Don King.
