With the controversy around her American Eagle jeans still fresh in the minds of most fans, Sydney Sweeney has faced a huge blow in her career after the release of her latest film, Christy. Based on the life of Christy Martin, the film was released on November 7, 2025, but the verdict of the opening week is nothing to write home about.
Sydney Sweeney’s Christy tanks at the box office
Slated to be a film that breaks Sydney Sweeney out of the mould, Christy follows the life of boxer Christy Martin. The ambitious project had quite a buzz around it before it came out, but once it did, everything seemed to disappear.
As per the latest report (via International Business Times), the film has grossed only $1.3 million in its opening weekend. This figure places it among the worst-performing films of all time. According to Box Office Mojo, the film ranked among the 10 weakest openings for a new release in more than 2,000 theatres. It also appears to mirror the trajectory of Dwayne Johnson’s The Smashing Machine, though with less critical success.
This also marks the worst performance by any film starring Sydney Sweeney, the actress who has been quite a controversial figure lately.
While most assumed that having Sweeney would already be a boost to the film, her latest controversy surrounding the American Eagle jeans, and especially her recent reaction to the same, could have played a big part in the film’s performance.
In her interview with GQ last week, the Euphoria star faced criticism for not addressing the controversy directly. She briefly mentioned the topic before moving on to other subjects, which drew backlash from fans and Hollywood figures alike.
While Christy continues to play in theatres, the film appears to be Sydney Sweeney’s biggest career setback so far.
