Jacob Elordi Dismisses Saltburn Bathtub Scene Criticism as ‘Prudish’

Jacob Elordi has reacted to criticism of Saltburn’s bathtub scene. In a new interview, he claimed people were “prudish.” He added that there were scenes in movies that are far more triggering compared to that scene. For the unversed, the scene in question sees Elordi’s character pleasure himself and ejaculate in the bathtub. After he exits, Barry Keoghan’s character comes in and ingests the semen-laced bathwater.

In a recent interview, the Euphoria star was asked if he felt embarrassed or honored to be associated with Saltburn’s polarizing bathtub scene.

“I actually think it shows me just how, I guess, prudish we are,” Jacob Elordi told Entertainment Weekly. He added that he had seen scenes in movies that were “far more extreme” and “far more graphic.”

Furthermore, Elordi expressed intrigue at people consuming graphically violent content in entertainment without question, but drawing the line at sexually explicit content. He opined that the top 10 remakes of crime documentaries on streaming platforms contained things that were a lot more disturbing compared to the bathtub scene. “I think that’s much more alarming,” he elaborated. “The kind of horrible joy that we all get from watching children be mutilated. That’s what was interesting to me.”

He continued, ” I was like, here’s a piece of fiction with something just a little taboo, and that makes people’s skin crawl. It’s an interesting parallel.”

The Frankenstein actor reiterated his statements in a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy, Sad & Confused podcast. He also pointed out that the film experienced two different lives — theatrical and streaming — because of which it got two types of responses. Elordi stressed that the film was viewed more from a “social” lens and less from a “Friday night cinematic experience” on streaming.

Saltburn is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Emerald Fennell wrote and directed the film. Besides Elordi and Keoghan, the film also stars Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Alison Oliver, Archie Madekwe, and Carey Mulligan, among others.

The film currently boasts a 72% fresh score and a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
