In a new trailer for The Golden Girls: 40 Years of Laughter and Friendship – Special Edition of 20/20, George Clooney reflects on the iconic show and the one cast member who always left him cracking up.
George Clooney Talks about his stint on The Golden Girls
Hollywood superstar George Clooney, known for his blockbuster role in Ocean’s Eleven, is an alum of The Golden Girls. Clooney guest-starred in the Season 2 episode “To Catch a Neighbor,” where he played a charming undercover detective investigating suspected jewel thieves next door. Now, decades later, he’s proudly saying, “thank you for being a friend” to the gig that helped launch him.
In the new ABC special, Clooney beams as he remembers stepping onto the legendary set. “The Golden Girls!” he quips in the teaser. The special also features Kelly Ripa, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Laverne Cox, and Mario Lopez, who reflect on the sitcom’s timeless appeal.
When asked which Golden Girl he relates to most, Clooney and Ralph both point to Bea Arthur’s Dorothy, who is known as the queen of deadpan and eye-roll-powered sass. And for George Clooney, “She made me laugh harder than anybody.”
This isn’t the first time Clooney has praised Arthur’s razor-sharp humor. On The Drew Barrymore Show in 2022, he recalled working with her, saying, “Bea Arthur is the funniest person in the world… She was filthy, filthy funny.”
At the height of its run from 1985 to 1992, The Golden Girls broke barriers and won hearts across seven successful seasons. Led by the cast of Beatrice Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty. Each of them took home Emmys, while the show itself won Outstanding Comedy Series twice.
Now, The Golden Girls: 40 Years of Laughter & Friendship — Special Edition of 20/20 premieres Tuesday, Nov. 11 on ABC.
