Jennifer Lawrence has always been open about how she’s grown as an actor, but in her latest interview, she talks about how Christian Bale completely changed the way she looks at acting. The Oscar-winning actress revealed that working alongside him on American Hustle not only boosted her confidence but also taught her the importance of preparation and presence.
Jennifer Lawrence no longer feels embarrassed about acting due to Christian Bale
Jennifer Lawrence recalled how self-conscious she once felt on set during her early career.
“I was 23 and very sensitive about getting embarrassed in front of the crew,” Jennifer Lawrence said, looking back on filming American Hustle with Christian Bale. “I thought acting was embarrassing. And so I would make a point of not acting until I absolutely had to, at ‘action,’” Lawrence said, speaking with the New York Times Magazine.
But seeing Bale work completely changed her mindset. “When the crew started getting ready, the lights started getting ready, and it became clear we were going to start rolling soon, he would slowly start getting ready,” she explained. “I was like, That seems like a good idea and I should do that when I’m more mature and can handle people looking at me and being like, ‘Pshh, she’s acting.’”
That experience, along with working under powerhouse directors like David O. Russell, helped her drop the fear and fully own her craft. She said Russell, in particular, toughened her up on set, and she stopped worrying about how a director works.
Lawrence also shared snippets of her next big movie with Martin Scorsese, titled What Happens at Night, joking about her very professional prep routine. She said that she would probably do what she always does, panic, hunt down an acting coach, meet them once, and then never go back. That’s her process, apparently.
She also praised her Don’t Look Up co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, saying his commitment inspires her. Leo’s the kind of guy who knows when his “character was born” and even “what kind of cologne they wear,” she said.
