Maya Hawke on How Auditioning for Quentin Tarantino Felt Different

Maya Hawke has opened up about auditioning for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. She recalled being “scared” on the day of the audition, especially after seeing Tarantino in a “serious mode.” Hawke did so in Jay Glennie’s new book.

Maya Hawke recalls Once Upon a Time in Hollywood audition

In Jay Glennie’s new book The Making of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, Maya Hawke recalled the day of her audition for the movie.

Hawke remembered being very “scared.” She added, “because I guess I knew that Quentin was going to be there, and I have known him my whole life. But, of course, in the room that day, he was very different, you know? He wasn’t, like, kooky Uncle Quentin — he was in serious mode.”

This comes after she was heavily criticized for being candid about the effect of nepotism in her career. She previously admitted that being the daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, who led Tarantino’s Kill Bill movies, has given her the opportunity to work in Hollywood easily.

“I’ve been wildly made fun of for this clip when I said, on the red carpet, that I auditioned,” the Stranger Things actress told The London Times. “I never meant to imply that I didn’t get the part for nepotistic reasons — I think I totally did.”

She added, “There are so many people who deserve to have this kind of life who don’t. I think I’m comfortable with not deserving it and doing it anyway.”

However, she takes the incident positively, saying, “It’s OK to be made fun of when you’re in rarefied air. It’s a lucky place to be. My relationships with my parents are really honest and positive, and that supersedes anything anyone can say about it.”

Later in the interview, she referred to Tarantino’s movie and said, “I got an audition for the project through the normal channels through my agents. I did an audition in my bedroom with my dad. We sent in the tape to Quentin, and I got a callback.”
