Hong Kong Actor Benz Hui Dead at 76

Benz Hui, a veteran Hong Kong actor who has worked in as many as 165 films, has passed away at the age of 76. He was dubbed the “King of Supporting Actors” for his genre-spanning appearances that he continued till 2025. Benz Hui also has an immense body of work on television, and his death has deeply shocked the industry and his fans.

Actor Benz Hui Shiu-hung, simply known as Benz Hui, passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at a hospital in Hong Kong.

Hui’s demise was due to complications caused by cancer, which led to multiple-organ failure, as per local media. He was admitted to the hospital a day earlier in a critical condition. (via The Standard HK)

During his five-decade-long run as an actor, Hui was a recognized face across the country and all of Asia due to the hundreds of acting credits he had accumulated over his career. Moreover, IMDb lists him in over 200 films and television shows. The veteran thespian’s notable acting roles often included police officers, gangsters, or lovable sidekicks.

Benz Hui’s real name was Hui Shiu-hung. A friend reportedly nicknamed him “Benz” because he started driving a Mercedes-Benz to work soon after his career took off.

Hui began acting in the heyday of Hong Kong entertainment from the 1970s to the 1990s. He prominently worked with TVB, whose shows saw immense popularity during the decades. This is also the time he became a household figure due to his numerous appearances.

As per reports, Benz Hui came from an influential family in Canton. His great-grandfather was a godson of Empress Dowager Cixi. He even served as an imperial official during the late Qing dynasty. Additionally, the late actor reportedly has many more influential relatives, though he never publicly confirmed it.

Hui’s most renowned works include Love Undercover, I Love Hong Kong 2012, SDU: Sex Duties Unit, Legendary Assassin, Hooked On You, Mr. and Mrs. Gambler, and Embrace Again.

Meanwhile, many prominent Hong Kong celebrities, like Shu Qi and Miriam Yeung Chin-wah, have expressed their sadness over Benz Hui’s death.
