The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart Reveals if He’s Leaving as Host

Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show contract is ending later this year, and the host recently opened up on whether he’d like to renew his contract or not. He said that “it’s not as clear-cut” as it seems, while expressing his opinions about the job.

Jon Stewart addresses his future as The Daily Show host

During an interview with David Remnick at the 26th Annual New Yorker Festival, Jon Stewart shared his plans for The Daily Show after his contract expires in December of this year.

“We’re working on staying,” Stewart revealed. “Look, the other thing to remember is it’s not as clear-cut as all that… They’ve already done things that I’m upset about,” he added, hinting at the recent Paramount and Skydance merger (via Deadline).

The Comedy Central host continued, “But then if I had integrity, maybe I would stand up and go, ‘I’m out.’ Or maybe the integrity thing to do would be to stay in it and keep fighting in the foxhole.” He added, “You don’t compromise on what you do, and you do it until they tell you to leave.”

In the past, Stewart has been openly critical of the political situation. However, he believes that the Paramount Skydance merger could tilt the media in favor of the Trump administration. With the recent temporary suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the ultimate cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Stewart has stayed cautious by being “patriotically obedient” to Trump.

He also shares that if the situation persists, the country could soon be in “some kind of soft autocracy where news is controlled.” (via CNN)

Jon Stewart hosted The Daily Show from 1999 to 2015, bringing political news in satirical forms. However, he returned to host the show in 2024 during the 2024 presidential election, hosting only the Monday episodes. The initial plans were only to host during the election. However, his time on the show was extended till the end of 2025.
