Jennifer Lawrence recently looked back at her early interviews and admitted she now finds them “annoying.” The Oscar-winning actress said she has become more careful about speaking to the media while promoting new movies. During her chat, she also gave a shout-out to Ariana Grande for her hilarious SNL parody, saying the pop star perfectly captured how people used to see her.
Jennifer Lawrence thinks she was ‘annoying’ in past interviews
In her interview with The New Yorker, Jennifer Lawrence opened up about her awkward relationship with press interviews. “Every time I do an interview, I think, ‘I can’t do this to myself again.’ I feel like I lose so much control over my craft when I have to do press for a movie.”
Reflecting on her previous interviews, she confessed, “Oh, no. So hyper. So embarrassing.” She also talked about the reaction of some of her fans who thought she was pretending. She said, “Well, it is, or it was, my genuine personality, but it was also a defense mechanism,” she said.
“And so it was a defense mechanism, to just be, like, ‘I’m not like that! I poop my pants every day. I look at those interviews, and that person is annoying. I get why seeing that person everywhere would be annoying.”
Jennifer Lawrence praises Ariana Grande for SNL parody
The actress also praised Ariana Grande’s “spot-on” SNL parody from 2016, where Grande played a dramatic, snack-loving version of her in a Celebrity Family Feud sketch. Grande’s version of Lawrence poked fun at how often Lawrence called herself “a regular person.”
Reflecting on how public perception turned over time, Lawrence said the backlash became “uninhabitable.” She said, “I felt—I didn’t feel, I was, I think—rejected not for my movies, not for my politics, but for me, for my personality.”
It is not the first time when she has mentioned the idea of a break from the spotlight. In a 2021 Vanity Fair interview, the actress revealed that she left Hollywood temporarily because she thought that “everybody had gotten sick of me.”
