Anthony Hopkins on How He Played a Monster Like Hannibal Lecter

Veteran actor Anthony Hopkins, mostly known for his role as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs, expressed his honest thoughts on his movies. Talking to David Marchese on The New York Times’s The Interview, the Oscar winner reminisced about his iconic characters in The Elephant Man and The Remains of the Day and admitted that he doesn’t consider any of them to be ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌”important.”

Anthony Hopkins discusses playing iconic roles such as Hannibal Lecter

Anthony Hopkins was asked if he considered any of his movies “important.” Hopkins replied, “No.” Even after David Marchese mentioned some of his iconic roles like The Elephant Man, The Remains of the Day, and The Silence of the Lambs, Hopkins still said they were good movies.

Talking about his role as Hannibal Lecter, he said, “But the thing is, you know, about all that stuff, people ask me about [The] Silence of the Lambs. How did you do that? I said, well, I am not Hannibal Lecter. I am not a butler. I am not this and I’m not that. I’m just a mechanic. I show up,” he said.

“Somebody says, how did you play The Remains of the Day? That butler, how did you play him? I said, well, I was very quiet, very still, and walked about quietly. How did you play Hannibal Lecter? Well, I played the opposite of what they promised. Oh, he’s a monster. Good morning. You’re not real FBI, are you?” he said.

Even after decades of success, the Oscar-winning actor stays humble. He sees acting as a job that requires skill and focus, not something that defines who he is. Earlier this year, he starred in the movie Locked with Bill Skarsgård.

Currently, Hopkins is filming his next project, Maserati: The Brothers, which also features Michele Morrone, Jessica Alba, Al Pacino, Salvatore Esposito, and Lorenzo De Moor.
