Tim Curry reflects on lying to Ivana Trump during Home Alone 2 filming
Tim Curry admitted having once lied to Donald Trump’s ex-wife, Ivana Trump, who was then the president of The Plaza, the hotel featured in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
He recalled the moment when Ivana knocked on his door, asking if he was happy with his room. “She knocked on my door and said, ‘Are you happy in your room? Do you like the way it looks?’ And I loathed it actually,” the actor told The Guardian.
The incident occurred when Curry, who played the concierge in the film, was staying at the hotel. Besides his encounter with Ivana, Curry also shared details on Donald Trump’s involvement during the production.
He remembered Trump wanting to introduce his then-girlfriend, Marla Maples, to Chris Columbus, the sequel’s director. He recalled Trump saying, “I’ve got to get Marla to meet Chris Columbus because she’s a brilliant actress,” adding, “And I thought: ‘Yeah, I’m sure.’” This wasn’t the extent of Trump’s involvement in the production. Trump, who owned The Plaza at the time, also has a brief cameo in the movie.
In an interview with Business Insider, Columbus shared that Trump’s cameo was the “only way” to shoot at his hotel. “We paid the fee, but he also said, ‘The only way you can use the Plaza is if I’m in the movie.’ So we agreed to put him in the movie,” Columbus shared.
The director continued, “When we screened it for the first time, the oddest thing happened. People cheered when Trump showed up on-screen. So I said to my editor, ‘Leave him in the movie. It’s a moment for the audience.’ But he did bully his way into the movie.”
