Critically Thrashed Disney+ Movie Could Get a TV Show Now

After a 2020 movie debut flop, the adaptation of a popular book might finally get a second chance at success, but this time as a TV show. A new rumor suggests that Disney is developing an Artemis Fowl animated series, aiming to redeem one of its biggest fantasy misfires in recent years.

Artemis Fowl animated series rumored to happen for Disney+

According to MyTimeToShineHello on X (formerly Twitter), Disney+ is reportedly developing an Artemis Fowl animated series. The scooper posted, “[An] Artemis Fowl animated series is in development for Disney+.” The news has got fans hopeful that a rebooted TV adaptation could finally do justice to Eoin Colfer’s widely loved eponymous book, something the 2020 movie failed to accomplish.

The Artemis Fowl book series follows a 12-year-old genius and criminal prodigy who kidnaps an elf named Holly Short to restore his family’s fortune. Over the course of 11 books, Artemis evolves from an antihero into a complex, morally grounded character. Despite its magical premise and strong cast, including Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Josh Gad, Judi Dench, and Colin Farrell, the movie adaptation seemingly failed to capture the charm and complexity of the novels.

Critics and fans alike slammed the movie, directed by Kenneth Branagh, for its messy plot, rushed pacing, and major deviations from Eoin Colfer’s beloved source material.

Now, Disney appears ready to give Artemis Fowl a second life through animation, a format that could finally do justice to the elaborate world of fairies, dwarves, and high-tech magic that defines Colfer’s universe.

Fans have long argued that Artemis Fowl is better suited for television than film. The series’ intricate world-building and evolving character arcs demand time to breathe, which a single movie couldn’t provide. A serialized animated format would allow the story to unfold across episodes, staying closer to the books’ tone and character development.
