Right now, George Clooney has pretty much achieved everything there is to achieve for an actor his age, and one of the things that never hindered his progress in Hollywood was drug use. The actor recently got candid with Esquire as he spoke about his history of drug abuse. He claimed that, for him, it was never that big a problem. Perhaps that remains one of the reasons Clooney is still going strong. Many actors from his time have lost their paths.
George Clooney talks about drug use in the 80s
The 1980s were a time when drug use was quite prevalent. This was especially true in the circuit that George Clooney was a part of. The actor was a participant in the consumption. However, he never let it take over his life like many actors his age did.
Discussing how his career never derailed, Clooney told Esquire, “I think probably, again, because I was older, I’d sort of done all my dumb things when nobody knew who I was. I would have been shooting crack out of my forehead if I’d hit when I was twenty-one.”
Speaking about his drug usage in the 1980s, George Clooney elaborated, “Eighty-two, I tried—I did blow and stuff. I used to make jokes about how I did too many drugs, but the truth is, it was never a big issue for me at all.” He added, “And look, there was an episode of Taxi where they’re all doing blow. At the time, it was like, No, this is not like heroin. It’s not addictive. But then it was like, Oh, well, it’s actually pretty fucking bad. Plus, it was all cut with mannitol. The baby laxative. Everybody would do a line and then take a shit.”
Clooney further added that he was more of an alcohol guy, even though he never did an excess of that either. Speaking about his alcohol consumption, Clooney added, “I’ve had periods where, I wouldn’t say it was a problem—I never woke up and drank or anything. But I’d have runs where I’d get pretty toasty every night.”
He also recounted a story of doing pot brownies, but he ended on the note that it was not really his drug.
With precise control, Clooney went on to enjoy a brilliant career in Hollywood. He won two Academy Awards, a BAFTA Award, and four Golden Globe Awards, among many other accolades. He remains one of the biggest actors in the world and continues to be active in the industry.
