The Spider-Man actress was recently promoting her new movie, Roofman, on Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett’s podcast Smartless. During their conversation, Bateman asked Dunst if the couple takes turns for parenting while working away from home.

Dunst responded by sharing an anecdote. “It’s so hard. I had a real moment last night. I just went to my friend’s house, I was like, ‘I can’t parent alone tonight, I just can’t,” she said, “I took them with me.”

The Melancholia actress showed a picture to the hosts and said, “I was getting ready, and I get this sign, ‘I need you.’ Him sad, and me with the door shut.”

Bateman describes the photo to the listeners: “So listeners, this is a picture of Kirsten inside one room with the door closed, and then her son on the outside, upset.” He then asked Dunst, “Did he slide that under the door?” to which she said, “Yes.”

The Bring It On actress continued talking about how they share parenting duties. “I let them sleep in bed with me when just Jesse’s not here.” She later added, “We had the summer together. It’s like, whoever’s up next. We’re still trying to figure it out. It’s really hard. So, yeah. They’re 4 and 7, and they’re two boys. It’s a lot.”

Dunst also shared that she doesn’t want to homeschool her kids, saying, “I don’t want my kids to be weird.”

Kirsten Dunst is starring in Derek Cianfrance’s Roofman opposite Channing Tatum. The movie showcases the true story of Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army Ranger who famously robbed McDonald’s restaurants by cutting through their roofs. After escaping prison, he hides inside a Toys ‘R’ Us to avoid being caught again. The movie is debuting in theaters on October 10, 2025.
