Shrek 5 Could Bring This Fan-Favorite Villain Back With a Twist

A new Shrek 5 rumor from an industry insider has sparked attention online, hinting at the return of a classic villain. The post quickly spread across social media, fueling speculation about how the sequel might deliver a major twist.

Farquaad rumored to return in Shrek 5’s twisted plot

A rumor about Shrek 5 has surfaced online, claiming that the film will reintroduce Lord Farquaad in an unusual way.

Recently, insider account MyTimeToShineHello posted, “In SHREK 5, when the group enters the real world and gets stuck there they come across Farquaad (the villain from the first movie) who now runs a Shrek-themed amusement park like Universal Studios.” This follows years of speculation about how DreamWorks might revisit Farquaad, a character originally voiced by John Lithgow and eaten by a dragon in the first film.

DreamWorks set Shrek 5 for June 30, 2027, after delays from July and December 2026. The film will arrive 17 years after Shrek Forever After (2010), the longest gap in the franchise. Walt Dohrn, Conrad Vernon, and Brad Ableson direct, with Michael McCullers writing. Voice recording began in 2024, confirming the return of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy. Zendaya also joined the cast as Felicia, the daughter of Shrek and Fiona.

Farquaad’s rumored comeback adds to ongoing fan discussions about potential revivals. The character previously reappeared in DreamWorks’ 2003 short The Ghost of Lord Farquaad and the Shrek 4-D Universal Studios attraction.

Online forums have debated whether Farquaad could return through magic, resurrection, or as a ghost, with one Reddit user remarking, “He was a ghost the last time we saw him.” Lithgow himself stated in 2024 that he would “say yes in a minute” if asked to reprise the role, acknowledging, “It turns out it’s impossible to recover from being eaten by a dragon.” (via People)

Alongside the fifth film, Eddie Murphy confirmed a Donkey spin-off is in development. The project has no release date yet, and production details remain unknown. DreamWorks has not addressed the Farquaad rumor, leaving the possibility open as Shrek’s world expands again.
