Kevin Costner Talks Hollywood Future After Yellowstone Exit

Kevin Costner recently opened up about the next phase of his Hollywood career after his exit from Yellowstone. In a new interview, he discussed his decision to move on from projects that no longer interest him and instead focus on pursuing stories that matter personally. He also highlighted the launch of his new documentary series, Kevin Costner’s The West, which explores the history of the American frontier.

Kevin Costner on what’s next for him in Hollywood

Kevin Costner, who played John Dutton in Yellowstone, explained that he will only take on projects now that matter to him personally. “I’m willing to do anything where I feel like what I’m doing is for myself,” Costner told Radio Times. “It doesn’t have to be a Western; it could be something else. But when something is no longer interesting to me, or there’s some other reason that I need to move on, I’m willing to do that,” he added.

The actor emphasized that storytelling and its lasting impact are central to his work. “I think you can write a short story, and it can live forever. You can write a novel, and it can live forever. You can make a short movie, and it can live forever. It’s about how you’re telling it. It’s about if other people are going to be able to relate to it and move to it,” he said. He added that some books “continue to live with us” because they resonate through generations.

Costner also noted his hope to remain significant to audiences. “I think the hope for me is that I can stay relevant; not only to myself, but to people who find my work. I can’t create work that I think is going to find them. I can only create work that when they do find it, it reflects what I was feeling and my sensibility. And hopefully they’re moved by it.”

His comments coincide with the launch of Kevin Costner’s The West, an eight-part documentary series on Sky HISTORY and NOW. Executive produced with historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, the series explores the history of the American West.

Costner said the project highlights the real struggles of that period beyond romanticized depictions, including conflict, cultural clashes, and the treatment of Native Americans.
