In the build-up to her upcoming film, Christy, Sydney Sweeney has revealed that the film did not use any stunt doubles while filming its fight scenes. Sweeney, who underwent an intense physical transformation to look the part of boxer Christy Martin in the film, noted in a recent interview that all the fight sequences shot for Christy are completely authentic.
Sydney Sweeney says ‘we are actually punching each other’ in Christy fight scenes
During a conversation with Vanity Fair, the Euphoria star disclosed that no stunt doubles or filming techniques were used to shoot the boxing scenes in Christy. Instead, it was the actors boxing with one another for real.
“Every single fight you see, we are actually punching each other. We are going full force. I always believed that you would not be able to make it feel real if it’s a stunt double or if it’s faking the hits,” said Sydney Sweeney while talking about Christy’s fight scenes.
Having trained in jujitsu, grappling, and kickboxing during her formative years, the 28-year-old actress found it difficult to adapt to the movements inside the ring. “My stances and a lot of my technique is different than boxing. You square up differently, and of course, you don’t get brought to the ground – everything’s on your feet,” Sweeney explained.
Nevertheless, she overcame every hurdle to produce an accurate representation of the International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee. Sydney Sweeney gained over 30 pounds, did weight-lifting exercises, and even practised boxing for several hours a day for three months to prepare for her role in Christy.
“She wanted to do the work. She wanted to train, she wanted to fight, she wanted to transform herself, and we were going to need all of that,” said director David Michôd of Sweeney’s dedication.
Having made its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, the movie is currently on track to hit theaters on November 7, 2025.
