Sabrina Carpenter invited considerable fan discussion when she showed up at her MTV VMAs afterparty clad in a bodysuit, originally donned by Cher. The 26-year-old artist became a highlight at the awards ceremony, where she snagged three awards: Best Pop Artist, Best Album, and Best Visual Effects. Furthermore, she serenaded the attendees with a performance of “Tears.”
Sabrina Carpenter stuns in bodysuit while paying tribute to Cher
At her VMAs 2025 afterparty, Sabrina Carpenter sported a Bob Mackie bodysuit that was first worn by Cher. The latter wore the bodysuit during her and Tina Turner’s performance of “Shame, Shame, Shame” in an April 1975 episode of The Cher Show.
The bodysuit consists of long black, pink, and blue neon straps that have mirrors of different sizes decorating them. The costume was auctioned off for $8960 after four bids. However, it’s unclear how Carpenter and her team managed to retrieve the outfit.
The Girl Meets World actress completed her look with gray heels that had light brown outsoles.
Carpenter’s appearance in the bodysuit sparked a plethora of reactions. “Wow!!! this is amazing,” a user wrote on a Reddit thread.
Another commented, “This is maybe one of my favorite looks I’ve seen her in & by far her best look of the night.”
“I love this dress! and the hair so much better than her usual hair,” a fan added.
However, one user suspected that the bodysuit the “Espresso” singer was wearing wasn’t the same one worn by Cher. They backed their suspicion by highlighting the height disparity between the two artists. “I just looked it up Cher is a full 7 and a half inches taller than Sabrina Carpenter!” they wrote. “I can’t imagine it’s the same dress, surely? Even with the platforms.”
This is not the only Bob Mackie look Carpenter served at the VMAs. For the awards ceremony, she donned a dress from the couturier’s 1986 Spring Collection. Dubbed “The Swamp Dress,” the official description as per Mackie’s Instagram, reads “The fully embellished cocktail dress is multicolor sequin and navy bugle beaded on black silk with an asymmetric fringe hem.”
