James Van Der Beek was reportedly facing significant tax debt years before he passed away on February 11, 2026. After failing to pay the amount for a few years, he and his wife owed a substantial sum, which led the authorities to issue a tax lien in 2021. The debt was later settled, and their property was discharged the following year.
James Van Der Beek faced tax debt before his death, report claims
Van Der Beek passed away recently after battling complications from stage 3 colorectal cancer. TMZ reported that years before his demise, the actor was in huge debt, which led to authorities placing a legal claim on their property in 2021 due to unpaid taxes.
It’s reported that he and his wife, Kimberly, owed $95,438.31 for 2017 and $173,890.31 in 2019, which makes it a total of $269,328.62. As they failed to pay the unpaid taxes, a tax lien was issued. However, in 2022, their property was released after they paid off the entire debt.
The outlet also reported that Beek and his family rented the home they resided in in Texas before they officially purchased it for $4 million a few weeks before Beek’s death. They reportedly took the help of Beek’s friend for the down payment on the house.
In light of his demise, Kimberly also recently set up a GoFundMe campaign with the aim of raising an amount of $1.5 million in donations. Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw were reportedly the second-highest donors, contributing $25,000, while an anonymous donor ranked first with a $30,000 contribution. At the time of writing, the campaign has received more than $2.5 million in donations, surpassing the intended goal.
On February 11, Kimberly confirmed Beek’s passing in an official statement on Instagram. She wrote, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. “
The post further reads, “There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now, we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.” Beek was officially diagnosed with colon cancer in 2023, but he publicly revealed it in the following year.
