Carini Lang Takes Your Thumbprint and Turns it into a Personalized Rug

Along with using it to pick up cups of coffee, hold TV remotes and make gun shapes with your hands, your thumb can now also be used to now gain access to your iPhone. Initially we all thought that was a little creepy, but after giving Apple infinite access to one of our key identifying features as humans, we now don’t know where we’d be without Touch ID, and we scoff at those who are still stuck entering in four-digit passcodes like simpletons.

Now Tribeca-based designer Joseph Carini and his company Carini Lang have found another use for your thumb, and that’s taking its thumbprint and utilizing it as the design for a super personalized rug for your home.

Speaking to the New York Times, Carini outlined the process behind the creation of the rugs, explaining how clients send Carini Lang a high-res .jpeg scan of their thumbprint before the design is then digitally recreated and sent back to them. Once they have approved of it, the piece is created using a combination of wool, silk, mohair, cashmere or nettle, allowing the client to customize how they want their Thumbprint rug to look.

The design is finally sent to Nepal, where weavers will transform it into a rug that can be purchased by the client for a starting price of $3,500 for a six-by-six carpet.

The Thumbprint rug is available in a zebra print design, and Carini has stated that they are eco-friendly and created with natural dyes. “They don’t produce any off-gas, so in a client’s home, they don’t have any chemical element,” Carini told NYT, adding: “People who are really sensitive won’t have any reaction.”

Some may balk at the thought of plastering their living room floor with a carpet bearing their thumbprint, and although it does initially seem more than a little self-absorbed, it’s not that absurd considering that both the fashion and technology worlds frequently introduce designs with heavily customizable options for those who want to insert their own personality into their possessions. There will be those who think that the Thumbprint rug goes a little too far, but hey, people who are interested in buying it are undoubtedly inveigled by the prospect of it being a unique conversation starter in their home, and nothing will get people talking more than a carpet that resembles their thumb.
