Little House on the Prairie star Melissa Gilbert has shed light on her relationship with actor Rob Lowe. In a recent discussion, Gilbert opened up about the time when she dated The Outsiders actor, noting how her inexperience in relationships and growing popularity ended up inducing issues in her personal life.

During her recent appearance on Jennie Garth’s I Choose Me podcast, Melissa Gilbert explained that she was extremely young when she and Rob Lowe decided to date one another.
“I was such a baby when Rob and I were together,” the 61-year-old artist said. She then added, “It was very tumultuous. I felt like a bit of an old sage in the business at that point, because I’d been doing it for so long.”
Gilbert then recalled how she had already achieved stardom with her stint as Laura Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie while Lowe was still finding his feet in the industry. Talking about how this disbalance affected her love life, Gilbert noted, “I was able to, sort of, sit back and watch this meteoric rise happen.”
She continued, “I don’t think I was prepared for the stuff that came with it, necessarily. She admitted, “I was prepared for all of the having to go to premieres and things and award shows and all of that. But I wasn’t prepared for the fandom and, frankly, the girls.”
Lowe’s ultimate success in front of the camera did not make things better between him and Gilbert, as per the latter. “It was like I didn’t exist. They just push right past me and stick phone numbers in his pockets and stuff. To say it was disconcerting is doing it a big disservice. It was horrible,” she remarked.
After kickstarting their relationship in 1981, Lowe and Gilbert intermittently dated each other for a considerable period before parting ways for good in 1987. Despite facing several issues during her time with Lowe, Gilbert believes she ultimately walked away with a lot of “valuable and important lessons.”
