Flaco Jiménez, the Grammy-winning icon of Tejano and conjunto music, has died at the age of 86.

His family confirmed the news late Thursday night through a heartfelt announcement on his Facebook. The message read, “It is with great sadness that we share tonight the loss of our father, Flaco Jimenez. He was surrounded by his loved ones and will be missed immensely.”

The family went on to thank his fans and friends for their love and support over the years. The message continued, “Thank you to all of his fans and friends—those who cherished his music. And a big thank you for all of the memories.”

The family also asked for privacy as they navigate the loss. As news of his passing broke, tributes poured in from across the globe. Fans and musicians took to social media to express their sorrow

While his family did not specify the cause of death, it was previously reported that Jiménez had been hospitalized earlier this year in January after facing a health complication. However, weeks later, a Facebook update offered a positive sign. The message read, “Flaco has been home, doing well and on the road to recovery. A huge thank you to all for the prayers, love and continued support.”

Throughout his lengthy and influential career, Jiménez earned widespread acclaim for his contributions to Tejano and Norteño music. His album Partners was also selected for preservation in the U.S. Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. 

Over the years, Jiménez accumulated numerous accolades, including six Grammy Awards. He also received recognition from the Americana Music Awards, Tejano Music Awards, and Billboard magazine, solidifying his place as a towering figure in Latin music.
