Israeli actor Alon Aboutboul, known for his roles in The Dark Knight Rises, Rambo III, and London Has Fallen, has died at the age of 60.
According to The Jerusalem Post, Aboutboul collapsed on HaBonim Beach near Zichron Ya’acov, Israel, on Tuesday morning. Lifeguards administered CPR, but were unable to revive him.
Aboutboul was born on May 28, 1965, in Kiryat Ata, Israel. He began his acting career in the 1983 Israeli drama Hapnimiyah and gained international recognition in 1986 with Two Fingers from Sidon, which premiered at Cannes. He made his American debut the same year in Every Time We Say Goodbye opposite Tom Hanks, and later appeared in Rambo III (1988).
In 2008, he starred in Body of Lies with Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe. In 2012, Aboutboul portrayed Russian nuclear physicist Dr. Leonid Pavel in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. He also played terrorist mastermind Aamir Barkawi in 2016’s London Has Fallen.
His television credits include recurring roles in FX’s Snowfall as Avi Drexler, as well as appearances in NCIS, Fringe, Burn Notice, Madam Secretary, and The Mentalist. In Israeli media, he starred in Shabatot VeHagim, Sirens, and Beaufort. His final role was in the miniseries The German, where he played Amos Shapira. He received both the Ophir Award and the Television Academy Award.
Israel’s Minister for Culture and Sport, Miki Zohar, posted on X: “I was deeply saddened to hear about the sudden passing of the actor Alon Aboutboul… he portrayed a wide range of characters, bringing depth and emotion to them, leaving a profound mark on Israeli culture.”
His wife, Shir Bilia, and their four children survive Aboutboul.
