Raiders Release Christian Wilkins from $110 Million Contract

In a surprising turn of events, the Las Vegas Raiders have decided to release Christian Wilkins from their roster, just one year into his multi-million dollar contract. As such, the 29-year-old defensive tackle, who started his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins in 2019, has officially parted ways with the 1983 Super Bowl champions.

Christian Wilkins released by the Las Vegas Raiders after one season

On July 24, the Las Vegas Raiders shared an update regarding Christian Wilkins’ status on their official X (formerly Twitter), where they confirmed their decision to release the injury-riddled sportsman from his four-year contract, worth $110 million (with $84.75 million in guarantees).

In their latest social media briefing, the Raiders stated, “We have decided that it is in the best interests of the organization to move on from Christian Wilkins, and he has been informed of his release from the team. This franchise has a Commitment to Excellence on and off the field. With no clear path or plan for future return to play from Christian, this transaction is necessary for the entire organization to move forward and prepare for the new season.”

Christian Wilkins only signed with the Silver and Black on a four-year bumper contract in March 2024. However, he was only able to make a total of five appearances for his new side, spending the majority of the last campaign on the treatment table. Wilkins sustained a season-ending Jones fracture to his left foot during his side’s October 2024 clash against the Denver Broncos, which the Raiders ultimately lost 34-18.

As such, Wilkins failed to participate in the Raiders’ organized team activities in May, even skipping his team’s compulsory minicamp. After the Clemson Tigers alum declined his side’s suggestion of undergoing surgery to fast-track his recovery, the Raiders decided to place him on the ‘physically unable to perform list’ before ultimately releasing him from his contract. The Raiders are reportedly also trying to void $35.25 million of the guaranteed money owed to Christian Wilkins, with the defensive tackle lodging a grievance with the NFLPA  in response.
