How Old Was Anne Hathaway in Devil Wears Prada?

Anne Hathaway recently hyped up anticipation for The Devil Wears Prada 2 by sharing Instagram posts about the upcoming movie. However, she also sparked questions among netizens about her age when she played Andrea ‘Andy’ Sachs in the first film.

The original movie, released 20 years ago, served as a pivotal project in the Academy Award winner’s acting career. It was a commercial success and a crucial vehicle for the actress to showcase her wide range. It was also instrumental in her transition to more mature roles following appearances in the teen-oriented projects The Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted.

So, how old was Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada? Here’s your answer.

What was Anne Hathaway’s age in Devil Wears Prada?

Anne Hathaway was 23 years old when she played Andrea ‘Andy’ Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada. She received critical acclaim for her performance in the comedy-drama.

Hathaway’s age is reflected in her portrayal of Sachs, who is depicted in the movie as a recent Northwestern University graduate. An aspiring journalist, she lands a job as a junior personal assistant to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the editor-in-chief of New York City’s Runway magazine. Sachs’s lack of fashion knowledge soon haunts her as she finds herself at the mercy of Priestly’s strict and unrelenting behavior.

Although The Devil Wears Prada became one of Hathaway’s most popular projects, the 42-year-old was neither the first nor second choice to play Andy Sachs. In a 2021 guest appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Idea of You star told Rosé — who asked her if there were any roles she had to “fight tooth and nail for” — that she was the “ninth choice” for the role (via PEOPLE).

Before Hathaway was cast, Rachel McAdams was the most favored to play the character. However, the latter turned down the role multiple times. Kate Hudson was also offered the same, but declined due to scheduling conflicts.

However, the Bride Wars star expressed regret for not doing the movie in a Capital FM interview. She admitted that she made a “bad call.” Besides Hudson and McAdams, Natalie Portman, Kirsten Dunst, and Scarlett Johansson were also reportedly considered.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 will be theatrically released on May 1, 2026. Hathaway, Streep, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, Tracie Thoms, and Tibor Feldman reprise their roles from the first film. They are joined by new cast members Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak, and Pauline Chalamet.
