Tony Gilroy recently delved into Andor stars Diego Luna and Genevieve O’Reilly‘s absence from the 2025 Emmy nominations. As nominations rolled out this week, Gilroy voiced disappointment over the snub, claiming that their performances were unfairly overlooked. Accordingly, there’s growing curiosity about what he said.
What did Andor creator say about Emmy snubs?
While Andor earned 14 Emmy nominations for its second season creator Tony Gilroy believes two brilliant performances were overlooked. In a recent interview with Deadline, Gilroy directly addressed the absence of Diego Luna and Genevieve O’Reilly from the acting categories.
He said, “There are a lot of performances that I wish were recognized. Diego Luna and Genevieve O’Reilly. There are a dozen performances.” Gilroy then highlighted that their performances extended beyond a single scene or episode. He said, “These aren’t great moment-to-moment [performances]. These are epic, long-term character studies that they’ve done over 24 episodes.” He further added, “I think the ultimate victory is that these performances will be celebrated and discussed for years to come. I feel confident about that.”
Luna leads the series as Cassian Andor, a character he first portrayed in 2016’s Rogue One. Meanwhile, O’Reilly plays political leader Mon Mothma, a role she has carried across multiple Star Wars projects. Andor premiered in September 2022, with its second season debuting in April 2025 after nearly three years of production.
As for returning to the Star Wars universe, Gilroy said he’s currently preparing to film a new project in Los Angeles next year. Though he left the door open for future involvement. He also noted, “I’m prepping a movie now to shoot in L.A. next year. It’s not on the menu right now. I’ll never say never.”
Though this latest installment earned the third-highest Emmy total for a Star Wars series, it only secured one acting nomination. Forest Whitaker was nominated in the Guest Actor in a Drama category for his portrayal of Saw Gerrera.
